IMLS Announces $160 Million in Grants to State Library Agencies

The Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded over $160 million in grants to state library agencies. Announced February 1, the grants, given under the Library Services and Technology Act, are made to each state according to a population-based formula. Funds are administered by each state’s library administrative agency, and the states must provide at least $1 for every $2 of federal support.

“This is the premier federal grant program for the nation’s libraries,” said IMLS Director Robert S. Martin. “It plays an important role in building the capacity of libraries to help communities address their changing educational, economic, and social needs.”

State library agencies use the grants to expand resources and programs for underserved groups, such as literacy initiatives, bilingual storytimes, and collection development, as well as books-by-mail and bookmobile services for homebound seniors. In addition, the grants fund educational initiatives, allowing public, university, and special libraries to form partnerships with schools and school libraries.

Press releases detailing the grants for each state are available on the IMLS website.
