Parking-Lot Shooting Prompts Bellwood Library Security AppraisalAfter two women were shot February 2 in the parking lot of the Bellwood (Ill.) Public Library in suburban Chicago, library officials are considering plans to work with the mayor and police to beef up security. Ruby Graham and her mother, Elizabeth, were walking from a nearby check-cashing station to the library to photocopy documents when they were accosted by a man in the parking lot who shot them both in a successful attempt to steal their purses, the Chicago Tribune reported February 4. The two women made it into the library, where employees called an ambulance.“I think this is a travesty that you can’t go to the public library without being assaulted,” library board President Arnie Bryant told NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV. The library was closed the following day as crisis counselors interviewed distraught library staff. Elizabeth Graham, 51, remained in stable condition February 3 with a point-blank chest wound, while Ruby, 34, escaped serious injury. Posted February 4, 2005. |
