Oregon Library’s Pets Face Uncertain FuturesThe housing status of a cat named Agie and two hamsters who live at Willamina (Oreg.) Public Library is uncertain as the city council debates a ban on animals at the library. The council unanimously banned animals from all city buildings earlier this month, based on concerns about allergic reactions and cat hair, according to the December 29 Salem Statesman Journal. Since then, at least 120 people have signed a petition to allow the pets to stay at the library. In addition, about 25 people have called the city in response to fliers with a picture of an angry cat that Library Director Melissa Hansen posted around the 1,800-resident town. For the time being, the animals still live at the library. The city council reconsidered the ban at a December 29 meeting, but reached no final decision, Hansen told American Libraries. “The kids just love those animals,” said patron Erin Taylor, who takes her son and niece to see the library animals because they live in an apartment that doesn’t allow pets. “I can’t imagine taking them away.” Posted December 30, 2005. |
