Fire Closes Northeastern Illinois University Library

Fire Closes Northeastern Illinois University Library

Northeastern Illinois University’s Ronald Williams Library in Chicago was closed after an electrical fire in a nearby mechanical room sent smoke into the facility late November 28.

Although firefighters had the blaze, which began around 10:30 p.m., out within an hour and the library’s collections suffered no fire or water damage, the library is still “a heck of mess” from soot and smoke, NEIU Executive Director of Marketing and Communications Terry Bush told American Libraries. All four floors of the library will have to be thoroughly cleaned—including books, carpets, furniture, upholstery, and wiring—which will keep the building closed for several weeks.

Temporary services have been set up in the student union, and campus computer labs will be open for extended hours, according to the library’s website. Bush also pointed out that because the university is part of a consortium, students could also get some materials from other local colleges. The library is tentatively scheduled to reopen January 2.
