Maryland Textbook Thieves SentencedA woman and her boyfriend, who stole nearly 500 books from the Prince George’s County (Md.) Memorial Library System last year, were sentenced to pay $20,000 jointly in restitution to the system.Crystina J. Stephens, 20, used fake identification to acquire seven library cards from the system, each in different names, according to the August 4 Washington Post. She used those cards to check out 483 books, mostly college textbooks on chemistry, biology, or mathematics. Stephens and her boyfriend, Larry L. Miler Jr., 23, removed library stickers, marked the books “used” to conceal library codes, and sold them to used-book stores. The library realized something was wrong when a female employee noted that one patron had 74 unreturned books. In checking the library card application, she found several others with nearly identical signatures and other overdue items charged to them. She notified the police, who in turn asked local used-book stores to call if anyone tried to sell the unreturned books. The couple was caught February 11 while reselling the texts at BookHolders, a store in College Park. They pleaded guilty August 3 to felony theft. Posted August 5, 2005. |
