Arson Acquittee Sought for Skipping Court

A man found not guilty of setting a $17-million fire at the University of Georgia Main Library is now facing an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on charges of trespassing at another University of Georgia library.

Jason Allen Nelms, 20, was banned from all campus properties for two years when he was arrested after the July 23, 2003, fire, according to the August 23 Athens Banner-Herald. That ban remained in effect despite his acquittal, and campus police arrested Nelms when an employee saw him in the law library June 14.

Nelms did not appear at court for arraignment on the trespassing charge. Clarke County State Court Judge Kent Lawrence issued the arrest warrant and forfeited Nelms’s $1,750 bond.
