
Binh Huu Hoang, 19, who pleaded guilty to first-degree theft, was also banned from all branches of the Multnomah library, the Portland Oregonian reported July 29. “I did a stupid thing, and I’m really sorry,” Hoang replied when Judge John A. Wittmayer asked why he had stolen the discs, among them copies of Black Beauty, Spider-Man, and Lord of the Rings.
Since Hoang’s indictment in May, the library has moved DVDs and CDs under stricter staff control, and library officials are researching other ways to deter theft, including adding new security systems, said spokeswoman Penny Hummel.
