Massachusetts Director Faces Charges of Disseminating Porn to Minor

Thomas Scully, director of the Beverly (Mass.) Public Library for the past 19 years, was arrested April 22 on a charge of disseminating obscene materials to a minor. He was freed on his own recognizance, placed on administrative leave, and barred from contact with minors.

News of the arrest hit the newspapers April 25, with the Salem News saying that according to the police report, Scully had allowed a teenage boy to view pornographic videotapes and DVDs at his home many times over a two-year period after catching the 15-year-old viewing porn at the library.

City Council President Paul Guanci said in the News that “Scully is intelligent, articulate, and passionate about his work and the city.” He added, “You feel for the boy’s family and for the young man. On the other hand, you hope this is some kind of misunderstanding. It sounds like maybe Tom made a very, very poor decision that kind of snowballed.” The boy told police that he viewed pornography in private and there was never any physical contact between him and the library director.

American Libraries could not reach Scully for comment. If convicted he faces up to five years in prison and a fine of as much as $10,000.
