Firefighters suspect the blaze began inside plastic recycling bins outside the library’s windows. Although they found no obvious signs of arson, officials found the conditions suspicious enough to warrant further investigation, the Contra Costa Times reported April 26.
The fire destroyed the library’s entire 7,000-volume collection, as well as recently installed automation upgrades that included two new computers, software, and an automated checkout system, according to ABC affiliate KGO-TV news April 24. The rest of the school was not damaged, and classes resumed April 25.
“We don’t have music. We don’t have sports,” said PTA vice president and library volunteer Nelda Welten in the Times. “All they have is the library.”
