Anonymous Donor Gives $125,000 to Reopen Bedford Library

An anonymous donor has given the city of Bedford, Texas, $300,000 to reopen facilities that were closed after the city council slashed $2.6 million from its $24.8-million budget in March. The donor earmarked $125,000 for the library, with the remainder to be split between the Boys Ranch Activity Center and the Splash aquatic park.

When the gift was announced at an April 15 city council meeting, the overflow crowd reacted with a standing ovation, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported April 16. “This is generous beyond imagination,” said Bedford resident Holley Hendrickson. “I wish we all could do so much.”

David Franklin, treasurer of the Friends of the Bedford Public Library, told American Libraries that the $125,000 would be enough to reopen the library on a half-time basis through the end of the budget year in October. Residents have launched a campaign to raise $400,000 to fully fund the facility for the remainder of the year.
