Postage Stamps Mark National Library of Canada AnniversaryThe National Library of Canada, established January 1, 1953, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a booklet of postage stamps honoring Canadian authors whose works can be found in its collections. The four stamps depict five authors—Susanna Moodie and Catharine Parr Traill, Morley Callaghan, Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau, and Anne Hébert—along with images of their books and selected text in their own handwriting. The authors represent a broad spectrum of Canadian literature, from early 19th-century fiction to modern fiction, poetry, drama, and screenplays. The stamps will be unveiled at a ceremony September 8 hosted by National Librarian Roch Carrier and Canada Post President André Ouellet in the Library and Archives Canada Exhibition Hall in Ottawa. The issue date coincides with International Literacy Day. Posted September 8, 2003. |
