Indiana Library Worker Admits Embezzling FundsA former bookkeeper for the Muncie (Ind.) Public Library pleaded guilty to charges of embezzling $123,383 from the library during his August 2000–August 2002 employment. Robert Carroll Oxley, 50, who could receive as much as three years in prison at his October 6 hearing, avoided being charged with forgery, which carries an eight-year sentence, by admitting the theft. However, a civil suit brought against him by the Indiana attorney general’s office is still pending.Court documents stated that Oxley “would cut unauthorized checks to himself and then alter the payer record that was submitted to the library board to reflect that the check had been paid to a vendor.” According to the September 10 Muncie Star Press, Oxley, who was arrested in June, filed a grievance August 27 against Delaware County jail staff claiming that they had “shirked their responsibilities by not delivering inmate mail,” particularly correspondence regarding his case.
