IMLS Announces 2003 National Leadership Grants

The Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded 49 grants totaling $13,758,471 for exemplary leadership and model programs of library and museum collaboration. The National Leadership Grants, announced September 24, support education and research in library and information science, preservation and digitization of library resources, and library-museum partnerships.

Among the grants awarded are:

  • a $487,045 research and development grant to the University of California at Riverside library to develop its Infomine portal into a cooperative, self-sustaining venture;
  • a $463,322 digitization grant to the University of Southern Mississippi libraries in Hattiesburg to create a digital library of primary sources associated with the civil rights era; and
  • a $499,500 library-museum collaboration grant to the New Media Consortium in Austin, Texas, a nonprofit consortium of college and university libraries, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to create an open-source, multimedia, online authoring tool.

The IMLS also announced 13 grants totaling $1,731,000 to improve library services in Native American tribal communities and Alaskan native villages.
