Architects to Draft Designs for Philadelphia Free Library Facelift

Philadelphia Free Library President and Director Elliot Shelkrot announced September 8 that the library has commissioned four prominent architectural firms to come up with designs for a $100-million expansion and renovation of the 1927-era Beaux Arts main branch that will transform it into a modern media center. The library will make a choice after the architects present their ideas at a public forum October 22, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported September 9.

The group consists of Sir Norman Foster, who created a new Great Court for the British Museum; the Boston-based Moshe Safdie, who designed the recently opened Salt Lake City main library; Mexican architect Enrique Norten, who is building Brooklyn (N.Y.) Public Library’s new visual and performing arts library; and Cesar Pelli, who planned a new central library for Minneapolis.

Shelkrot said he hoped to double the size of the existing facility and add work and storage areas, Internet and audiovisual rooms, a café, an auditorium, and an expanded children’s library.

Mayor John F. Street, who has already committed $30 million in city funds to the project, has told the library that it must raise the balance from other sources, including state and federal funding and private donations.
