Elk Grove Village Library Funds to Aid Airport Expansion Fight

The Elk Grove Village (Ill.) Public Library board announced May 12 it would turn over $100,000 in surplus capital funds to help the Chicago suburb hire lobbyists and legal experts to fight a proposed expansion of O’Hare International Airport.

“It was part of our rainy day fund and we consider this to be a serious downpour,” Board President Gil Schumm said in the May 13 Arlington Heights Daily Herald, indicating that the move would not affect new book purchases or other library resources.

Recent legislation proposed by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and currently pending in the Illinois House would allow the city to condemn approximately 200 Elk Grove Village businesses for the expansion, affecting some 2,300 employees. An earlier city proposal would have involved only 50 businesses.

Trustee Nancy Czarnik told the Daily Herald that the library has just as much to lose if Chicago takes the property; with a smaller tax base, the library may not have enough money to operate.
