Pueblo Board President Resigns Amid Controversy

Pueblo (Colo.) City-County Library District board President Glenn Ballantyne resigned April 29, nearly a month after the board fired popular library Executive Director Richard Lee. Lee had questioned the library's contract with Ballantyne, who also served as a paid fundraiser for the library.

Ballantyne had cut his business ties with the library earlier in the month, but the Pueblo city council still planned to consider removing him from the board, KOAA-TV news reported April 29. The Pueblo district attorney has been investigating the board, with his report expected shortly, said the April 30 Pueblo Chieftain.

A May 1 board meeting drew some 70 library employees and other residents, many of whom demanded that the board rehire Lee, then resign. Doris Kester, Lee's sole supporter on the board, moved that he be reinstated, but her motion failed to receive a second, the May 2 Chieftain reported. “I think we could search the entire country and not find anyone more qualified than Richard Lee,” Kester said.
