Super Diaper Baby Triumphs over GrandmotherSuper Diaper Baby has won a victory over the grandmother of a 2nd-grader who wanted the character’s exploits banned from the libraries and classrooms of the Riverside (Calif.) Unified School District.A materials review committee voted 5–2 June 12 to retain Dav Pilkey’s The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby, part of Pilkey’s award-winning Captain Underpants series, despite Pam Santi’s objections that it was filled with toilet humor and bad grammar, the Associated Press reported June 13. “I just want children to be educated and not degraded,” Santi told the AP. “Reading that book, I think is degrading.” Because the book is not mandatory reading, the committee’s decision is not subject to school board approval. However, Santi said she is considering appealing to the Riverside County Office of Education. Posted June 16, 2003. |
