Former Bookkeeper Charged with Embezzling Muncie Library FundsA former bookkeeper for the Muncie (Ind.) Public Library has been arrested for embezzling more than $123,000.Robert Carroll Oxley, 49, was charged with forgery and theft in March and arrested recently in Tybee, Georgia, where he moved after leaving the library last August, the Muncie Star Press reported June 11. He was returned to Muncie and was being held in the Delaware County jail under a $50,000 bond. A State Board of Accounts audit last year found that Oxley failed to deposit $72,598—a little more than two-thirds of the fines and fees collected over an 18-month period—and wrote checks to himself worth $51,830. Oxley is also accused of forging the signature of the library’s treasurer on a document asking the library’s bank to no longer return canceled checks for record-keeping purposes. Oxley’s trial date has been set for October 29. Forgery carries a standard four-year prison term and theft a standard 18-month sentence, according to the Star Press. Posted June 16, 2003. |
