Denver PL Assailant Sent to State Psychiatric Hospital

A man charged with stabbing a Denver Public Library patron in the library’s children’s section January 15, 2002, has been found not guilty of attempted murder and sent to the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo. Denver District Judge Morris Hoffman found Tommy Lee Young, 52, not guilty by reason of insanity, the Denver Rocky Mountain News reported May 22.

His victim, 22-year-old Bea Ibberson, was hospitalized with cuts to the face, neck, chest, and arms and released after two days.

Two psychiatrists and a psychologist diagnosed Young with schizophrenia and said he was psychotic when he attacked Ibberson, thinking she was confronting him.
