Chat Room Use in Library Leads to Alleged Assault of TeenAn Ocala, Florida, man was arrested July 11 for the alleged sexual molestation of a 14-year-old Williston, Florida, boy he met through chat-room exchanges while the youth was using a Williston library workstation. The incident has prompted city police chief Daniel Davis to suggest that the library should be monitoring chat-room sessions. Davis said in the July 16 Gainesville Sun that he takes issue with the library’s “position that these are freedom of speech rights, and they don't feel that they can provide any constraints.” He added, “There’s got to be some test case.”The Williston facility is a branch of the Levy County Library, which filters its machines but does not extend blocking software to chat-room sessions. William James Flanagan III, 38, was arrested July 11 and charged with lewd and lascivious battery and using a computer to lure a minor into sexual activity. The teen’s mother told police that she had previously removed the family computer, but that the boy began logging on at the library. Posted July 21, 2003. |
