Arson Blamed in University of Georgia Library FireThe state fire commissioner has ruled that a fire at the University of Georgia’s main library annex July 23 was deliberately set. The blaze started around 5:45 p.m. in a storage room in the second-floor stacks, causing an estimated $1.5 million in damage to federal depository documents, computers, and several cases of microfiche, the Athens Banner-Herald reported July 25. The university’s special collections on the third floor escaped with minimal smoke damage.“Because the investigation is continuing, we can’t discuss specific details of the way this fire was set,” Commissioner John Oxendine said, “but we can say that it was arson.” Police had no suspects as of July 25 but they were questioning witnesses and offering a $10,000 reward. Firefighters brought the flames under control after 20 minutes, and no injuries were reported. The university hopes to reopen the building by the time the fall semester starts August 18.
