Anchorage School Library VandalizedVandals tossed chunks of concrete through a window and pushed over two rows of bookshelves at the Chugiak (Alaska) High School library July 3, causing an estimated $3,000 in damage. The same night, witnesses spotted two youths fleeing a nearby elementary school after smashing windows in a caretaker’s recreational vehicle outside. The school district began inviting campers to stay in school lots two years ago in an effort to discourage vandalism, the Anchorage Daily News reported July 4. Superintendent Carol Comeau was angry not only at the latest attacks on schools—which follow an incident in May that caused $14,000 damage from graffiti and glued door locks—but that they targeted a volunteer. “He’s doing a public service by camping on our playgrounds, and this is what he gets for it?” she remarked. Two children, ages 9 and 10, were arrested the following night for breaking windows at yet another elementary school, but it was not clear if the incidents were related. Posted July 14, 2003. |
