Online Educational Site Will Fold

Columbia University, a founding partner of Fathom.com, an online educational company launched in 2000, has announced it will close the site March 31.

With the support of 13 other partners, including the British Library and the New York Public Library, Fathom offered fee-based online courses and access to resources from numerous institutions. More than 65,000 people had registered for 2,000 classes through the site, the New York Times reported January 13.

Ann Kirschner, Fathom’s chief executive, said the company had established a “gold standard for online learning.” Beginning April 1, Columbia will concentrate efforts to reach alumni and off-campus groups under a nonprofit umbrella.

Michael Zavelle, senior vice president for administration at NYPL, said that Fathom had made it possible for the library to experiment with methods impossible for the library to realize on its own. “We admire Columbia greatly for carrying it on as long as they have in very difficult economic times,” he said.
