New Salt Lake City Library Opens DoorsSeveral thousand Utah residents turned out to admire the amenities of Salt Lake City’s new library at its grand opening February 8. Adjacent to four acres of land that will be turned into a city park this summer, the six-story, 225,000-square-foot building doubles the space of the old facility and includes a curving, climbing wall; reflecting pools; an amphitheater; and space for shops, cafes, and a public radio station, the AP reported February 10. “My ambition was for it to be the best library in the world,” Boston-based architect Moshe Safdie said before the opening. Safdie solicited community input for months before unveiling the design for the $65-million project in February 2000. The library, in conjunction with area bookstores, planned to continue celebrating the new facility with a host author readings—including Isabel Allende and Tony Hillerman—the following weekend.
