Raphael to Head Multnomah County PLMolly Raphael, director of the cash-strapped District of Columbia Public Library, has been named director of the Multnomah County (Oreg.) Library effective November 24.“She had a record of serving a difficult system. She basically kept a sinking ship from sinking,” Multnomah County Chairwoman Diane Linn said in the August 5 Portland Oregonian. Despite massive cuts in the DCPL budget, during her five-year tenure as director Raphael is credited with implementing the system‘s first strategic-planning process, developing partnerships with public- and private-sector entities, and enhancing daytime, after-school, preschool, and summer-reading programs. “What is extraordinary in Multnomah is that passion for libraries is felt so widely in the community,” Raphael said. “I am eager to continue the fine work that is already being done.” She will receive a yearly salary of $138,000 to run the Multnomah system, which includes a central library and 16 branches supported by a $45.5-million budget. Raphael has been an administrator at DCPL for more than 25 years, serving as assistant director for program and support services, executive assistant to the director, and acting director before she was appointed director in 1998.
