
NYPL is trying to make up for recent cuts in city funds. This year it received $104 million, roughly the same as in FY2003, which was $16 million less than the year before. The cuts have led to a hiring freeze, less equipment replacement, reductions in hours, and fewer book purchases. “We have incredible programs and incredible staff, but nothing's moving up to speed,” NYPL spokeswoman Caroline Oyama said.
The idea may have been inspired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is seeking aid from the private sector to help the city out of its financial crisis.
American Library Association President Carla Hayden commented, “There's something that strikes at the core of a community when a library is threatened. We’re getting a lot of community support, and people saying ‘Not the library—this is too much.’”
