“There is nothing quite like a trip to the library,” Mrs. Bush, a former school librarian, told local businesspeople during a luncheon later that day. “Libraries allow us to journey as far and as wide as our imaginations allow.”
Library board Chair Don Counts said he hoped the first lady’s visit would benefit SAPL, which needs $50 million in upgrades but in the last five years has raised less than $10 million. “This is the chief librarian of the United States coming down to promote libraries,” he said. “I’d like to use her same message. Libraries are not a drain, they’re an investment that you can’t really put a dollar value on.”
