Indianapolis Board Fires Director Szynaka

After refusing to offer his resignation, Indianapolis–Marion County Public Library Chief Executive Officer Edward M. Szynaka was fired by the library board April 17.

The four members of the seven-member board who voted to terminate Szynaka would not give specific reasons for the dismissal, calling the matter a personnel issue; but trustee D. Mark Bowell, who made the motion to fire Szynaka, told the April 17 Indianapolis Star that that the problem was the directors leadership ability, trust between him and board members, and community relations. However, Madge Engle, who voted against the motion, said politics is playing into this and accused one trustee of having a personal vendetta against Ed.

Szynaka has headed the 23-branch system since 1994. IMCPL is in the midst of a controversial $102.7-million expansion of its central library. The Star reported that a 2001 budget hearing grew contentious when a Republican councilman hired an expert to testify that the library didn't need a tax increase that Szynaka had requested.
