Man Charged for Defrauding Kalamazoo Library, Celebrity Speakers

The Kalamazoo (Mich) Public Library may be a victim of the same man who allegedly defrauded Andy Rooney of 60 Minutes, former boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, and several other speakers over the last three years, the White Plains (N.Y.) Journal News reported November 4.

In a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in White Plains, authorities say Alan S. Walker—whose company, the Program Corporation of America, books celebrity speaking engagements—falsely claimed to KPL that he represented actor James Earl Jones, who gave a speech at the library in April.

KPL paid Walker $16,950; when officials learned he didn’t really represent Jones, they had to cut another check to the agency that does. Walker, who never returned the money to KPL, was arrested and charged with mail fraud.

Walker’s attorney, Raymond Granger, maintained that his client was innocent and said “he looks forward to the chance to vindicate himself in court.”
