Georgia Man to Be Tried on Child-Porn ChargeJohn Matthew Stewart, 35, of Oakwood, Georgia, was ordered November 21 to stand trial on charges of felony computer pornography after being accused of viewing lewd images of children on a computer at the Hall County Library in Gainesville. According to the November 22 Gainesville Times, a woman complained October 29 about Stewart’s activity in a first-floor computer lab.Images downloaded from the Internet while Stewart was connected were displayed in court and were described as showing children under the age of 7 exposing themselves, engaged in sexual activity, and simulating sexual intercourse. The log from the computer Stewart used contained the search terms “pre-teen girls” and “pre-teen sex.” If convicted, Stewart would face a prison term ranging from one to 20 years and a fine of up to $10,000. “I have not heard of another [incident] like it in Georgia since we installed filters,” Deputy State Librarian David Singleton said. “Unfortunately, there’s not a perfect product out there. Regardless of the product, there will be people who get around it. My understanding is [Stewart] got around it.” Posted November 26, 2003. |
