Arkansas City Librarian Sues School DistrictA high-school librarian who was terminated by the Arkansas City, Kansas, school board in 2002 has filed suit in U.S. District Court in Wichita against the school district, the former superintendent of schools, and the former district library chairperson. Robert Hicks, who filed the complaint October 15, is seeking $500,000 in actual damages as well as punitive damages and a written apology from the school board.Hicks was reinstated to his job at the Arkansas City High School in 2002 after a due-process hearing officer determined the board had acted improperly in firing him for using the library computer to access sexually explicit Internet sites. In February, Hicks had his attorney, Todd D. Epps, send a letter to the board asking for damages and an apology but received no response. “He had to sell a lot of his goods, including a Cobra [sports car], and he had to sell these goods at fire sale prices,” Epps said in the November 4 Arkansas City Traveler. “Number one: We want to put him back where he was [financially], at least. And two: We want to keep this from happening to anybody else.” Posted November 10, 2003. |
