Hard Drive Heist Has College Officials Stumped

A computer hard drive containing sensitive information was taken from its room in an old abandoned library at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California, according to the December 2 Costa Mesa Daily Pilot. It was found the evening of November 28 in the cooling tower part of the building, sitting out in the open on top of a compressor.

A college computer technician who tried to check his work e-mail from home on the 28th became suspicious when he got a message saying the system was down. When he checked at the library, he found the hard drive and a power strip missing and called police. The technician and a police officer found the missing items while searching the building.

The computer itself is not worth much, but the software it carries is worth about $20,000. The computer controls the entire Coast Community College District’s network, and holds information such as telephone registrations and school records. According to the technician, no one knew about the computer, and only he and Sprint Phone Systems had access to the building. The library is currently empty, locked, and fenced off, OCC spokesman Jim Carnett told the Daily Pilot, and is awaiting renovation in the spring.

There was no sign of forced entry. But a check of the computer showed that some information may have been removed. The intruder also disconnected some wires that operate the satellite communication systems and the campus public safety radios. Carnett said that, in an effort to improve security, “access to the building will be severely restricted.”
