New York Times Honors 27 Librarians with Awards
In a December 16 awards ceremony, the New York Times gave $2,500 apiece to 27 U.S. librarians who had been selected to receive the 2003 New York Times Librarian Awards. The third annual presentation of the award, this year marked the first time that librarians working outside the northeastern United States were honored; the winners hailed from 14 states, with 15 honorees serving in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut in recognition of the award’s initially being given only to librarians working in those states.
Selected by a committee of Times staffers as well as 18 librarians, the honorees were nominated by grateful patrons, as were almost 2,000 other librarians in 46 states. Times Vice-President of Marketing Services Alyse Myers stated that the “terrific response” to the newspaper’s April–June call for nominations proves “the enormous impact librarians have on library patrons.” “It is incredible that an institution that is not library-connected feels so strongly about good libraries that they are recognizing librarians across the nation for community service,” Cathy Nelson, assistant director of the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library in Berlin, Connecticut, and one of the recipients, told American Libraries.
