The Institute of Museum and Library Services has issued new guidelines for the second year of its Librarians for the 21st Century grants. The grant program is designed to help recruit and train librarians and strengthen graduate schools of library and information science. Award amounts range from $50,000 to $1 million, with one-to-one cost sharing for requests other than student support and research projects.
With an increase in appropriations—from $10 million in 2003 to a requested $20 million for fiscal year 2004—IMLS has added additional funding priorities. In addition to scholarships for master’s- and doctoral-level students, IMLS has established a new priority to build the institutional capacity of graduate library schools through curriculum development in such areas as digital library science, research methods, and leadership.
The new guidelines are available at the IMLS website. The application deadline is January 15; awards will be announced in mid-July.
