Renovated St. Paul Central Library
Gets $1-Million Gift

The St. Paul (Minn.) Public Library has received a $1-million gift to establish an endowment to support the Information Commons reference area in its newly renovated Central Library.

The gift from Richard and Nancy Nicholson is the largest donation, outside of bequests, ever given to the Friends of the St. Paul Library. Interest from the gift is expected to generate $55,000 a year for reference materials. “It will allow the library to purchase far more materials than they would be able to do with the regular budget,” Friends Executive Director Peter Pearson told the September 5 Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Nancy Richardson told the September 5 St. Paul Pioneer Press that the gift, which is being made through their family foundation, “is a wonderful way to create a heritage for our children and grandchildren.”

The Information Commons will be named for the Nicholsons at a fundraising gala to be hosted by Garrison Keillor September 21.

The 85-year-old Central Library has been closed since October 2000 for a $16 million-renovation. The reopening is scheduled for October 5 with a day of free performances, author readings, and library tours.
