Ex-Governor Turns Papers Over to
Library of Virginia

Ending a months-long dispute, former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore turned over to the state library 228 of the remaining 242 boxes of his administration’s files November 17. Since June, the library had claimed Gilmore was withholding public documents, while Gilmore maintained that the 288 boxes of papers he gave the Library of Virginia earlier this year were all he was legally obligated to turn over.

Under the mediated agreement, some of the records deposited at the library will be protected by executive privilege until 2015, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported November 19. In addition, Gilmore will keep 14 boxes of personal correspondence, which includes political files, business cards, and stationery.

“The people of Virginia, historians, and future generations now will have access to a much more complete historical record from the Gilmore administration,” State Librarian Nolan T. Yelich said in the November 19 Washington Post.

Gilmore called the agreement “a good precedent for future governors.”
