Brey, Totten Seek ALA Presidency;
Bishoff Resigns As Treasurer
The American Library Association Executive Board approved the Nominating Committee’s selections for ALA presidential candidates at its Fall Meeting in Chicago November 2–3. Seeking the 2004–2005 ALA presidency are Carol A. Brey, executive director of the El Paso (Tex.) Public Library; and Herman L. Totten, regents professor in the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of North Texas in Denton. The committee also selected 70 candidates for ALA Council who will be named in the December issue of American Libraries.
In a surprise announcement to the board November 3, Liz Bishoff, ALA treasurer since 2000, said she would resign next June, a year ahead of her term expiration. Bishoff said regretfully that being ALA treasurer was too demanding and was jeopardizing her health. It remained unclear how Bishoff's term will be filled.
ALA members current as of January 31 will vote on the spring ballot. The candidate elected will serve as ALA vice president/president-elect for 2003–2004 and as president the following year. Ann Sparanese, head of adult and young-adult services at Englewood (N.J.) Public Library, chaired the nine-member Nominating Committee.
