NYC Launches School Library InitiativeThe New York City Board of Education and the Robin Hood Foundation unveiled May 20 a five-year initiative to renovate most of the city’s elementary-school libraries, stock them with books and state-of-the-art computer technology, and provide MLS training for teachers through a tailor-made program at Syracuse University. Deputy Mayor Dennis M. Walcott, Robin Hood Foundation Executive Director David Saltzmann, U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins, and playwright and actress Anna Deavere Smith joined volunteers, corporate sponsors, and community supporters at the new library at P.S. 101 in East Harlem—one of 10 pilot libraries in the first phase of the initiative—to announce the project. To date, $28.1 million has been raised for the first 30 libraries, including $16.1 million from the board of education, $5 million from the mayor’s office, and nearly $7 million from the Robin Hood Foundation. Corporate sponsors have contributed an additional $15 million in books, computers, software, and architectural design. Schools Chancellor Harold O. Levy said the initiative “serves as a catalyst not only for ongoing improvement of instruction and student learning, but also provides a means to instilling a lifelong love of learning.” Posted May 27, 2002. |
