Flood Drenches West Virginia LibraryFloodwaters from swollen creeks swamped the McDowell County Public Library in Welch, West Virginia, after storms dumped four inches of rain in six hours in southern parts of the state May 2. Interim Director Donna Morgan closed the library early that night so staff could get home early, but by May 5 the building was clogged with about two inches of mud, according to the May 6 Bluefield-Princeton Daily Telegraph. “We’ve lost at least half of our books . . . and the children’s department is in ruins, but this library will not close,” Morgan said optimistically. “We will be reopening.” Meanwhile, a huge pile of muddy, discarded books grew larger on the street outside as staff sorted out the damage. All four of the public computers donated by the Gates Foundation were ruined. State Sen. Truman Chafin (D-Mingo) visited the devastated library May 6 and offered some hopeful words. “You will get new stuff,” he said. “You will get new computers, new books, new carpets, and all will be paid for by the federal government.” Morgan told the Daily Telegraph that the library Friends group is planning some fundraisers to help restore the building.
