Woman Abducted from South Bend LibraryA 23-year-old Indiana University/South Bend student was abducted as she left the St. Joseph County Public Library’s downtown library shortly after 8 p.m. March 6. A witness reported a struggle near a vehicle outside the library to a security guard who then called police, Library Director Donald Napoli told the March 9 South Bend Tribune. The following night, police arrested Willie Lee Davis, 37, after stopping the car owned by the woman, who had been reported missing by her roommate. He was later charged with one count of kidnapping, three counts of rape, two counts of criminal confinement, and one count of deviate criminal conduct. Davis, who has a long criminal record, pleaded innocent March 11. If convicted of all the charges he faces a maximum penalty of 273 years. The Tribune reported that police were investigating whether the crime was connected to an attack two weeks earlier on a 19-year-old woman who had just left the library; in that incident the victim managed to escape and call police from her home. Napoli said the library planned to increase its security in the wake of the crime. A fourth guard will be added to the three already on duty at night, to be assigned outside the building and available to escort patrons and staff to their cars. Additionally, video cameras that scan the building’s exterior will be updated to use tape that can record images after dark. Posted March 18, 2002. |
