Wheeler Resigns as Detroit PL HeadThe Detroit Public Library Commission accepted the resignation of Library Director Maurice Wheeler at its monthly meeting March 19 and announced the appointment of Nancy Skowronski as interim director. Skowronski has been serving as acting director since December, when Wheeler went on extended sick leave. “Dr. Wheeler has been on medical leave undergoing surgery and postoperative procedures,” Commission President Johnnie L. Hunter reported. “He was expected to return to work at this time. However, he informed us that in order to achieve and sustain good health at this point in his life, he must consider other alternatives.” Wheeler has served as director since 1996. Under his tenure, DPL reopened neighborhood branches, renegotiated union contracts with support staff and librarians, saved major portions of the Burton Historical Collection after a severe flood in 2000, and suffered a $3.1-million reduction in special grants by the Michigan legislature last year. “It’s not an easy job being an urban librarian in these times,” Patrice Merritt, executive director of the DPL Friends group, said in the March 19 Detroit News. The commissioners have designated an administrative committee, chaired by Judge Edward Thomas, to conduct a nationwide search for a new director. Posted March 25, 2002. |
