Canadian Library Association
Executive Director Whitmell Resigns

Canadian Library Association Executive Director Vicki Whitmell has resigned, effective March 20. Whitmell took the position in April 1998 after serving as chief librarian at the University of Toronto’s Joseph L. Rotman School of Management since 1990.

Whitmell had submitted her resignation once before, in March 2001, but she rescinded her decision the following month.

CLA President Margaret Law and Vice President Wendy Newman met with the association’s staff March 21. They announced that longtime CLA member Gwynneth Evans would take on the management of current CLA projects while the executive council searches for Whitmell’s replacement.

In the wake of declining membership and revenues, CLA has been reassessing its structure and focus. It moved to less costly office space in 2000 and has reduced its staffing. A commission appointed by CLA Council submitted a report in March 2001 that, among its 18 key recommendations, called for restructuring of the executive council and membership fee.
