The Library Association and the Institute of Information Scientists are merging April 1 to form the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). The first meeting of the new organization’s council is scheduled for April 3. University of Southampton Director of Academic Support Services Sheila Corrall will serve as its 2002–2003 president.
The LA was founded in 1877 and has nearly 26,000 members, while the IIS was founded in 1958 and has approximately 2,200 members. The two organizations have been discussing a merger since 1996 and agreed in principle to form a new entity in 1999 after a vision statement could be drafted and adopted.
A new monthly magazine titled Update is replacing the LA’s Library Association Record and the IIS’s Inform. Current members of both associations will have electronic access to either the Journal of Information Science or the Journal of Librarianship and Information Science for the remainder of the year.
