Arson Ruled as Cause of Ohio Library FireThe fire that destroyed the Perry Heights branch of the Stark County (Ohio) District Library June 9 has been classified as arson according to local and state fire officials. “All of us are in agreement that it is an arson fire,” Perry Township Fire Chief Gary Justice told the June 12 Canton Repository. “As far as getting into specifics, I won’t do that because now it is a criminal investigation.” Thomas Ratcliff, a spokesman for the Ohio Fire Marshall’s Office, told the Akron Beacon Journal that the fire was set in a shed behind the main building where old library shelves and other materials were stored. “We’re certainly horrified that someone would set fire to the library but our main focus has been getting our service back out there again,” Stark County Library Executive Director Kent Oliver told the Massillon Independent. A bookmobile service has been established in the parking lot of the branch. More than 54,000 items were lost in the blaze, which caused an estimated $2 million in damage. According to the Beacon Journal, the only materials recovered were 27 items found in a drop box. Posted June 17, 2002. |
