Strike by Toronto Library Workers AvertedThe Toronto (Ontario) Public Library Board reached a tentative agreement July 4 with its more than 2,400 workers, avoiding a threatened strike scheduled for the same day. Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 416, which represents library staff, accepted the city’s offer of a 9.2% pay increase over three years, although it is still seeking protection for senior employees whose jobs may be outsourced, according to the July 4 Toronto Star. “Both parties can be pleased with what has been achieved,” City Librarian Josephine Bryant announced. “It’s business as usual.” A shutdown would have closed all city libraries and ended children’s summer programs, public access to computers, home delivery programs, and other basic services. Ratification of the agreement by union members is expected by July 15. Meanwhile, the city has to deal with an ongoing strike by other workers, including garbage collectors and daycare-center workers. Posted July 8, 2002. |
