Sari Says Nothing More in Dyersville, IowaThe board of trustees of the Kennedy Public Library in Dyersville, Iowa, voted unanimously July 10 to ban Sari Says: The Real Dirt on Everything from Sex to School from their shelves. Library board Chairman Wayne Hermsen told the Associated Press July 23 that some of the contents of the book were too sexually explicit and that this is the first book that has been banned by the library. The book by Sari Locker, an online columnist for Teen People, offers young people advice on topics such as fashion, sex, and talking to their parents by answering questions she has received from teens. “As a teen educator, I know that when a teen asks me a question about sex, they need an honest, accurate answer because otherwise they’re going to be getting information from sources that are not positive-value based or encouraging sexual health,” Locker told the AP. Trustee Betty Anne Scherrman asked Director Shirley Vonderhaar not to shelve the book after thumbing through it shortly after it arrived, and brought the issue to the board in June when Vonderhaar declined Scherrman’s request. Sari Says is listed on ALA’s Young Adult Library Services Association’s 2002 annual recommended list of Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers. Posted July 29, 2002. |
