Suspect Charged for Syrup Vandalism

A man identified from surveillance tapes was charged with second-degree malicious mischief February 11 for allegedly pouring syrup down Tacoma (Wash.) Public Library book drops, causing damage to nearly $10,000 worth of library materials, the Tacoma News Tribune reported February 12. Since October, a vandal has hit five Tacoma book drops 21 times, most recently pouring a gallon of syrup into the downtown branch’s book drop.

Police think Richard Lacey Epton may also be responsible for similar incidents at other libraries in Pierce County and Seattle, according to the February 9 News Tribune.

At his hearing, Epton was recommended for evaluation by a mental-health worker who reported that Epton refused to talk to her because, he said, two tarot-card readings directed him not to. In 1997 Epton had also been tested for psychological competency after being charged with harassing those associated with the media and professional sports.

Library spokesman David Domkoski said staff was able to save most of the damaged books. “While this will have an impact on our book budget,” he said, “it won’t impact services in the long term for our patrons.”
