Self-Proclaimed “El Dildo Bandito”
Rejects Plea Bargain
The man who admitted stealing a string of 21 ceramic penises from a Boulder (Colo.) Public Library exhibit last November and replacing it with an American flag and a note signed “El Dildo Bandito” refused a plea agreement at his arraignment January 28.
Bob Rowan, who appeared in court wearing a sweatshirt that read “Love our flag or leave our country,” rejected the terms of the agreement, which would have banned him from the library and kept him away from the artist who created the work. He pleaded “not guilty” to the misdemeanor criminal-tampering charge and will return to court March 7, the Denver Rocky Mountain News reported January 29.
“It was a disgusting piece of so-called artwork,” Rowan said in the January 29 Boulder Daily Camera. “I did nothing but do this public library a favor.”
The work by Susanne Walker, titled Hung Out to Dry, had been part of an “Art Triumphs Over Domestic Violence” exhibit sponsored by the Boulder County Safehouse, a battered-women’s shelter.
