$3-Million Donation
Boston University has agreed to give up a $3-million gift it received in 1993, after philanthropist David Mugar threatened to sue the school if he didn’t get back his unused donation for the expansion of the school’s main library.
The money will be split between two charities chosen by Mugar—Cape Cod Hospital and public television station WGBH—but the school will keep the estimated $1.2 million earned in interest, the Associated Press reported December 18.
Mugar told university chancellor John Silber he would consider future improvements to the library, which was named for Mugar’s grandparents and funded by an earlier family gift. “For over 40 years, our family has had a close association with Boston University, and I look forward to maintaining that relationship for many years to come,” he said.
