Alaska State Library Staffer
Pleads Innocent in Embezzlement Case
A former financial manager in charge of purchases for the Alaska State Library pleaded innocent in Juneau Superior Court December 2 to more than 20 felony counts of fraud, theft, and forgery. Gary L. Martin, 43, was indicted by a grand jury November 29 on charges of stealing more than $150,000 from the library using phony purchase orders over a period of three years, the Juneau Empire reported December 3.
The library officially terminated Martin’s employment December 3, Deputy Director George Smith told American Libraries, although he had taken a voluntary demotion in early November shortly after being charged with possessing automatic weapons and obtaining prescription drugs by deception. Martin’s alleged embezzlement activities came to light as a result of the drug investigation.
According to court records, Martin is accused of presenting the library with false bills for services rendered from two nonexistent companies, creating false documentation for the work, and issuing checks which he then cashed.
